The Imperial Palace is the official residence of the Emperor of Japan and his family. It was built on the site of the former Edo Castle which stood there during the Tokugawa shogunate. It was completed in 1888. Today it is the residence of Emperor Akihito, the 125th emperor of Japan.
The Imperial Palace was destroyed by bombing in the Second World War. It was rebuilt in 1969 using traditional Japanese methods.
